  • The Roman army was limited due to a fatal Plague and during one outbreak, people were dying at the rate of 5,000 a day, just from this illness.

  • The barbarians might of had an advantage over the romans because on average barbarian was taller and had longer swords.
  • The Vandals, the Huns, and the Goths all contributed to the destruction of Rome
  • the barbarians used violince to take out Rome.
  • The Vandals are germanic tribes.
  • the greeks used the name "barbarians" because of the way they talked 'bar-bar-bar'

CURRENT PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

  • These are the deffinitions of terrorism.
1. The act of destruction is performed by a person or group of persons not acting on behalf of an established government
2. the act of destruction is performed to redress a real or imaginary injustice.
3. the act is aimed directly or indirectly at an established government.
  • One major problem that the United States is facing right now with terrorism is hijacks. in order to prevent this, airports are using screening to find hidden weapons.
  • Financial Anti-Terrorism Act:
The Financial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001 was a bill calling for the Federal Government to have the increased ability to control and monitor financial criminals and the ability to sentence them.

David,

  • I will answer your questions as best as I can.

  • 1. Terrorists are often difficult to find because they hide. They know they are wanted by police, security, and intelligence forces of states. Most states have very sophisticated means of apprehending terrorists, so terrorists must devise equally sophisticated means of being undetected. This is greatly aided by the public support they receive in the population. The more safe houses and the larger the terrorist network, the easier it is for terrorists to stay on the run and not be detected.

  • 2. We often say that terror is the weapon of the weak. If terrorists could use more conventional means (either normal political participation or conventional force to achieve their goals), they would. Thus, those who are politically weak or marginalized resort to terror tactics as a means of attempting to counterbalance those who have significantly more power (usually both traditional political support in addition to police and military support).

  • 3. Terrorism has been with us since there have been those who are marginalized and who seek greater power and influence and do not know any other way to promote their interest. We are more aware of terrorism today due to media coverage and the nature of communications in the modern world. This gives terrorism a spotlight it might not have had in earlier eras of human history.

  • 4. If terrorism has become more violent, it probably coincides with the growing violent power that states have at their disposal. The speed, power, and accuracy of weapons under state control have grown enormously in recent decades. This means that those do not possess such weapons believe they must be even more violent to be noticed.

  • Dear Dr. Timothy J. White,

  • Hello, I am a student at Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati, Ohio and I am working on a school project where I am trying to find the solution that would of saved Rome from the Barbarians, but in order to do that, I have to figure out America's modern day problems and solutions to foreign terrorism, which is similar to what happened to Rome. Here are some questions about foreign terrorism I would like to ask you:

  • 1. What makes it hard to track down and eliminate terrorist groups?
  • 2. What are the main reasons people soin or start terrorist groups?
  • 3. Has terrorism become more common recently?
  • 4. Has terrorism become more violent recently?

  • Thank you for your time
  • Sincerely,
  • David DuBois
